Is Moulin Rouge, the movie, based on a true story?

Im wondering if there is any real truth to the 2001 version of the movie Moulin Rouge with Nichole and Ewan. Just seams to me that to have a death of something so real to us all in reality, that the movie would be true some how. Any ideas out there with a link to back up what you know? thanks.
